Once you are qualified as an audiologist, you have many career opportunities: working solo, as part of a private practice, in a hospital or other institutional environment, and as a teacher. You might also become a forensic or animal audiologist or enter the area of research and development.
A Choice of Patients
Audiology is essential for treating hearing loss in an aging population and detecting hearing problems in children. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), lack of awareness about the warning signs of communication disorders leads many young children to wait a year or longer before anyone recognizes their symptoms.
Communication difficulties and the inability to clearly hear speech cause problems for young adults moving from school to work. Audiologists, therefore, have a role in preparing young adults to navigate a world that is less tolerant of communication problems than it could be.
A Choice of Careers
You may decide to change your career path. You might consider social work, vocational education, helping manufacturers of hearing aids and other devices design and sell their products, and assisting companies with noisy environments to prevent and screen for hearing loss in employees. You might also join the public health effort to help frame policies related to hearing healthcare.
Resume Challenges
With all those options before you, your resume must be clear about the type of position you are looking for; make the most of your education, certification, and prior experience; and, if needed, show that you have transferrable skills that are valuable in an alternative career.
You must also present your experience using language that is appropriate for your audience. For example, other audiologists may have a stronger understanding of the science behind your achievements than, say, the hiring manager for a company selling hearing devices or needing someone to screen employees’ hearing.
Robin’s Resumes® regularly meets these challenges for clients in the medical, industrial, and technical fields and will be happy to help you with your resume.
