Financial planners help individuals and companies understand and organize their finances to reach a goal, such as retirement or homeownership. Financial advisors may also manage investments and buy and sell stocks. The terms are broad (financial planners are considered a type of financial advisor, for example).
As a financial planner/advisor for companies and/or individuals, you will need a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a similar field. In addition, both financial planners and financial advisors may have licenses and certifications, though usually different types. For example, financial advisors need financial securities licenses Series 6 and 7.
According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, the job prospects for personal financial advisors remain strong, keeping pace with prospects for other occupations. In fact, US News & World Report ranked financial advisor as number 24 in its top 100 jobs list, based on pay level, amount of stress, room for advancement, and work/life balance, among other factors.
You can move into the financial planning/advising area without any prior experience. Many people start their careers with on-the-job training and apply for licensing as they progress. However, whatever your level of experience, make sure that your resume emphasizes:
- Customer service skills
- Progress toward certification/licensing
- Professional achievements in financial and other areas
- Financial skills/training
- Networking skills (essential for finding clients)
- Communication skills (needed for explaining financial information).
Financial planners and advisors also have a career path as financial analysts, brokers, or insurance agents. If you are advancing your career in finance, the proper certifications and licenses will open more doors, so be sure to do your research.
In addition to a resume, a formal biographical statement may be helpful as an introduction to future employers or clients and for posting on a company website. Once again, you want to reassure clients that you have the credentials and experience they are looking for.
Whether you are starting in, transitioning, or advancing your career in finance, Robin’s Resumes® will work with you to create a resume and biography that will help you achieve your goals.
